Timbavati Traverse 2024: An Epic Adventure in Support of Conservation

The Timbavati Traverse 2024 was an unforgettable experience, filled with eager smiles, awe-inspiring wildlife sightings, and the incredible spirit of community coming together for a cause. The adventure kicked off with the pre-event registration on the 20th of September, where excited participants collected their customized kits and exclusive participant goodie bags, setting the tone for the big day to follow.

On the 21st of September 2024—just one day before World Rhino Day—the real adventure was about to begin. What felt to be one of the coldest days of the year in Limpopo, with strong winds and chilly temperatures, the energy and excitement of the participants was unwavering. The weather failed to dampen their spirits, but instead fueled their determination. Participants started arriving from 4:45 a.m. on a crisp & windy morning, only to be greeted by rain and lightning, leading to a slight postponement of the start. But as soon as the storm passed, they began to line up, motivated by the marching boots and song of the Timbavati Field Rangers who channeled courage in the participants to take on what lay ahead. With the sound of the gun, they were off, embarking on a journey of a lifetime through the wilderness landscapes of Timbavati Private Nature Reserve.

With the cooler conditions favouring not only the runners and walkers alike but giving the participants extraordinary wildlife sightings. Participants seeing four of the big five while out on route, from the elusive leopard and majestic lion to a towering elephant bull, and a magnificent rhino cow and calf. Participants also treated to an array of plains game species, large clan of hyena’s as well as nature putting on a breathtaking show for our adventurers. The thrill of seeing these iconic animals in their natural habitat added to the already electric atmosphere (without the lightning). Despite the unpredictable weather, each participant returned home with such fulfilment after completing their journey safe and sound, celebrating not only their achievement but also the vital causes they were there to support.

Supporting Causes That Matter

The Timbavati Traverse isn't just about the adrenaline adventure; it's about making a real tangible difference. This year, participants ran and walked to raise awareness and funds for critical conservation initiatives, particularly dedicated to the protection of Africa's endangered wildlife, the rhino. These funds help sustain anti-poaching efforts, wildlife protection programs, and local community development projects that foster a harmonious relationship between people and nature. Every step taken by our participants was in honour of these causes, helping ensure a future where wildlife and communities thrive together.

A Celebration to Remember

After tackling the Traverse, everyone gathered for an afternoon of celebration at the prize-giving ceremony, where they were treated to a fantastic lineup of live entertainment. The soulful tunes of artist Dan Vee, captivating cultural dances, and an energizing performance by the Southern Cross drummers made the event truly special. Guests were also thrilled by an interactive reptile show, bringing them up close to some of South Africa’s lesser-known and even feared creatures.

As the celebrations unfolded, participants enjoyed delicious food and drinks, courtesy of our valued local vendors, enhancing the festive atmosphere. The sense of camaraderie was palpable, as everyone came together to reflect on the day’s accomplishments and the impact they made. Each participant was awarded a stunning, locally handmade beaded trophy—a heartfelt token of appreciation and a symbol of the important role they played in supporting our conservation and community efforts.
