15 May: Just When You Thought It Couldn’t Get Any Better

The month of April is one of my favorite months as it celebrates the start of the cooler months ahead. The colours of the bush are so vibrant when the morning dew finds a spot on the vegetation which enhances the colour of trees and grasses. The bush is still very green and the grass quality and quantity is still in abundance, making winter feeding for the grazers and browser good.
My guests were leaving early this morning, so I only had two hours. This certainly limited my route options. John had heard leopard calling on the airstrip last night, so we checked there first and came across a hyena,
What a marathon of a morning! All the Motswari guides seemed to split up across the reserve, each checking a different area. Other than some general game, the morning started off quite quietly. Then, Shadrack called in two young
On Saturday 14 April, the Hoedspruit Airforce Base hosted a special day dedicated to saving the rhinos. Throughout the day numerous events were held, all focused on creating awareness of the ever present rhino poaching problem. One of the events was a 42km relay marathon, which the Timbavati won!
A recent group that was hosted at Bateleur Mobile Camp wanted to focus their time on large bore rifle shooting (using man-made targets only), specifically from a guiding point of view, i.e. how to stop an animal charge at close quarters, trailing the 'big 5' and interpreting track and sign left behind by creatures big and small.
We are fortunate to have a large dam close to Shindzela, and during summer months we often witness elephants thoroughly enjoying themselves in the water. It is fascinating to watch them play and swim.
With the heavy rains we had during January, the dam is still rather full and deep, so the elephants are often completely submerged. It is amazing to see just the tip of a trunk sticking out of the water.
The weekend delivered some wonderful sightings in and around our safari camp with the highlight being Rockfig Junior and her young cub. This is the first decent sighting I have had of the young cub who now looks to be around 3 to 4 months old. Our guests are often in awe when they see the big five, with the leopard being a huge favourite.
Daily Synopsis. Leaving the lodge this morning Jacky and I were a little lost on where to go, so when in doubt we always head to Argyle and Sohobele Dam and hope that inspiration comes to us along the way.
